What is Vimshottari Dasha?

Vimshottari Dasha (Sanskrit for 'one hundred and twenty') is the principal Vedic astrological timing system. It divides a 120-year cycle across the nine grahas (Sun through Saturn, plus the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu) in a fixed sequence with fixed year-durations. The starting point in the sequence is determined by the nakshatra the Moon occupies at birth. Each major period (Mahadasha) is then subdivided into nine sub-periods (Antardashas), and each Antardasha into nine sub-sub-periods (Pratyantardashas), forming a layered timing scaffold accurate to weeks.

What are the Vimshottari year durations?

The canonical year durations are fixed and must never be altered: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20 years, Sun 6 years, Moon 10 years, Mars 7 years, Rahu 18 years, Jupiter 16 years, Saturn 19 years, Mercury 17 years. Total: 120 years. These come from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and are repeated identically in Phaladeepika, Saravali, and every classical text. Any astrologer or tool that uses different durations is not following the classical Vimshottari system.

How is the starting Mahadasha determined?

By the nakshatra the Moon occupies at the moment of birth. The 27 nakshatras are mapped in groups of three to the 9 grahas: nakshatras 1, 10, 19 (Ashwini, Magha, Mula) are ruled by Ketu, so a person born under one of these starts in a Ketu Mahadasha. Nakshatras 2, 11, 20 are Venus. 3, 12, 21 are Sun. And so on. The exact starting age of the next Mahadasha is computed from how much of the natal nakshatra had elapsed at birth — this is why two people born on the same day in different cities can have very different starting points.

What does a Mahadasha activate?

A Mahadasha activates the themes of the planet whose period is running, modified by that planet's specific placement in your birth chart. The mature themes per classical tradition: Sun — authority, recognition, paternal matters; Moon — emotional life, mother, public reputation; Mars — energy, action, conflict, real estate; Mercury — communication, learning, commerce; Jupiter — wisdom, expansion, marriage, children; Venus — relationships, comfort, art, sensuality; Saturn — discipline, long-term work, slow ripening; Rahu — sudden expansion, foreign matters, ambition; Ketu — spiritual depth, separation, withdrawal. The actual experience depends on the planet's dignity and house lordships in your specific chart.

What is an Antardasha?

An Antardasha (also called Bhukti) is a sub-period within a Mahadasha. Each Mahadasha is divided into nine Antardashas — one for each graha in the same Vimshottari sequence. The duration of each Antardasha is proportional to its own Mahadasha length (so within a 20-year Venus Mahadasha, the Venus-Venus Antardasha runs about 3 years 4 months, while the Venus-Mars Antardasha runs about 1 year 2 months). The Antardasha refines the Mahadasha — it tells you which sub-theme of the running Mahadasha is active at any given moment.

What is a Pratyantardasha?

A Pratyantardasha is the third layer down — a sub-sub-period within an Antardasha. Each Antardasha is further divided into nine Pratyantardashas (again following the same Vimshottari sequence and proportional durations). The Pratyantardasha gives weeks-to-months level timing precision. Serious classical work also uses Sookshma (4th layer) and Prana (5th layer) but those are rarely consulted outside professional rectification work.

Are there other dasha systems besides Vimshottari?

Yes — Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra lists more than 30 dasha systems, including Ashtottari (108 years, used for some Moon-prominent charts), Yogini (36 years, popular in North India), Chara Dasha (Jaimini-school, based on signs not nakshatras), Kalachakra Dasha, and many more. Vimshottari is the most widely-used because BPHS gives it primacy and because empirical experience over centuries has shown it to be the most consistently reliable for events. Saturn (19 years) — discipline, long-term work, slow ripening of effort, restrictions, structural change, hard-earned maturity. Often the most demanding Mahadasha.
Rahu (18 years) — sudden expansion, foreign matters, ambition, materialism, unconventional success, illusions, intense desire.
Ketu (7 years) — spiritual depth, separation, withdrawal, sudden cuts, mystical experience, dissolution of attachments.

No. The reputation of “Jupiter Mahadasha is always best” or “Saturn Mahadasha is always hardest” is a popular oversimplification. The classical authorities are explicit that a planet's effect during its Mahadasha depends on (a) its natural significations, (b) its dignity in your chart (own sign, exalted, debilitated), (c) the houses it owns for your specific Lagna, (d) its aspects and conjunctions. A weak Jupiter can produce a difficult Jupiter Mahadasha; a strong Saturn produces a constructive Saturn Mahadasha.

Sade Sati is Saturn's TRANSIT — the slow-moving real-time motion of Saturn through the signs around your Moon. The dasha is the natal timing scaffold. The two interact: Sade Sati during a Saturn-friendly Mahadasha is much milder than Sade Sati during a Mars or Sun Mahadasha. Both must be read together for accurate timing.
